Stamp with large margins to slightly in at upper left, uncancelled but tied by file fold on 1848 folded letter to Josiah Smith in Clearfield Town, Pennsylvania. Blue "Philada. Pa. 5 cts. Sep. 4" (Clarke 71a) circular datestamp.

This cover was a private letter addressed to the sitting President of the United States, Zachary Taylor; however, it was not a presidential free frank, but charged 5 cents.

Single with ample margins to just touching, tied by pencil "S" and small black 4-bar grid cancel on folded local cover, with side panels removed.
This stamp is the rarest of the small Blood issues, and the tied example is extraordinary.

Folded letter datelined February 9 (1849) and carried outbound from New York with red "PHILAD^ RAILROAD" straightline handstamp (Clarke 430e) struck twice, matching red New York circular datestamp. Addressed to Miss Helen Floyd Jones, care of General H. Floyd Jones, in South Oyster Bay, Long Island. A blue Blood’s advertisement label is affixed to the reverse.
