Blood’s 15L18 and US 1857 on Lady’s Envelope, Nov. 22, 1858

Red Blood's double-circle datestamp ties 15L18 and is struck again on small envelope bearing 3c 26 tied by black circular grid with Nov 22, 1858 Philadelphia large octagonal datestamp. Address has been erased.

A census of covers known with the red Blood's handstamp was published by Marc Stromberg in The Penny Post for October 2018. This cancellation is quite scarce with only 14 reported (this cover was not known to him).

There are only two covers “to the mails” with 15L18 and US postage, this one and number one in his census.

Scott value of $350 is for the usual black datestamp, and does not account for the scarcity of the red cancellation, in use only from Nov. 22-26, 1858.

With a PF Certificate which states, "BLOOD'S TYPE 10 HANDSTAMP ON "SEEDS AND FARM MACHINERY" ADVERTISING COVER WITH SINGLE "F". GRILL WITH BLUE QUARTERED CORK CANCEL AND MATCHING "PHILAD'A, PA. FEB 22 (1869)" PMK TO GERMANTOWN, PA, BLACK "CARRIER FEB 23" HANDSTAMP. AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT IT IS A GENUINE USE, THE COVER WITH A REPAIRED TEAR AT TOP, THE STAMP WITH TONED PERFS AT TOP."

According to Patton, "the authenticity of this stamp has never been satisfactorily proved. Disregarding the five or six obvious forgeries there are two types of the Clay stamp which, judging by the quality of their printing and production, may possibly have been genuine emissions of the Blood's Post under Kochersperger's management"

With a PF Certificate which states, "IT IS GENUINE, UNCANCLLED, BUT SOILED AND DISCOLORED."

With a PF Certificate which reads, "RED "PAID/BOUTON" HANDSTAMP CANCEL. AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
It Is Genuine With A Faint Horizontal Crease At Bottom And FAINT TONED SPOTS"

20L1 is very scarce on cover, and rare off cover. Bowman records only 21 examples on cover. At the time of Lebel's exhibit, only 18 were recorded.

Boyd's City Express, 2c Black on Green, on folded letter addressed to Wall Street address, datelined December 12, 1848. Very faint red Boyd's City express markings.

2c Black on Green, ample margins to slightly in, black cancel, tied by red “New-York 5 cts. 24 Jun.” icds on 1847 part-printed notice from Presbyterian Church to Mass., Fine

2c Black on Green, cut to shape with red Boyd's City Express Post" oval handstamp with matching "Paid JTB." This appears to have originated in London on March 17, 1847, from "Capt. Morris" of "Baring Bros & Co."

It must have been carried outside the mails to New York. It was given to Boyd's for delivery on May 3 and answered on May 11.

2c Black on Green Glazed, large margins with blue Philadelphia "5" in circle handstamp on cover to Philadelphia.
