Lot 7121

Brainard & Co., 24L1, 1c Black, Huge Margins with Remnant of a Second Stamp Affixed on 1844 Folded Letter, Conjunctive American Mail Co. Three-Line Handstamp

One of Only Two Recorded Conjunctive Usages

Старт: $1,000

Оценка: $1,500 - $2,500

One of Two Recorded Covers with Brainard's Stamp Used in Conjunction with American Letter Mail Company Service
Bottom stamp with large square margins and manuscript "T" cancel, denoting Troy as the office of origin (not tied), with a remnant of a second stamp at upper left. Conjunctive red "Forwarded by / American Mail Co. / No. 12 State St. Boston" three-line handstamp. Ink smears at right, tiny tear in right margin of stamp. Very fine stamp, presentable cover.
The folded letter was mailed July 26, 1844 and received July 30, 1844, from Troy, N.Y. to Henry Hill Esq. at Pemberton Square, Boston, a distance of about 150 miles. The letter enclosed $37.00, undoubtedly triggering a double rate, as indicated by the two Brainard stamps totaling 25c each. Since Brainard had no office in Boston, the letter was transferred to American (Letter) Mail Company for final delivery.
A postscript in the letter reads: "To save expense I (have) for(war)'d (this) by Express & (have) pay(paid?) postage. If you prefer the oth(er) way, the Mail, please say so in your next." — "the Mail" referring to the U.S. Express Mail, which would have cost approximately treble the single letter sheet rate of 18½c, or 56½c, compared to Brainard's 25c (or only 20c at Brainard's discount rate of 20 stamps for $1.00).

The Philatelic Icons Sale 2026 | June 26-28

Сессия: Sale 33a: Locals: Adams City Express - Dupuy & Schenck — Sunday, June 28, 2026 | 12pm EST, 9am PST

We are honored to present The Philatelic Icons Sale, the largest and most significant auction Americana Stamps has ever offered.

America's history lives in the letters that crossed goldfields and battle lines, in express covers that linked frontier towns to the outside world, and in the stamps that mark how a young country built its postal system from scratch. This sale brings together more than 1,500 lots that trace that story, including philatelic icons seldom offered to the public.

This auction is a natural fit for 2026, the 250th year of the United States, and for the Boston 2026 World Expo (May 23 to 30, Booth 141), the once-per-decade international exhibition where we are proud to open the sale. More than 750 lots are accompanied by Philatelic Foundation certifications, the largest concentration of certified material we have ever offered in a single sale.

As always, the sale is designed to serve both the collector and the researcher. Whenever available, you can expect:

✔  High-resolution imagery of all aspects of the item
✔  Links to reference articles and supporting research
✔  Links to philatelic certifications
✔  Census data and population insights
✔  Provenance details to trace notable histories

Whether you are pursuing a long-sought rarity or simply enjoy the chance to study material of this caliber, we invite you to explore the Philatelic Icons Sale and join us in Boston for our largest in-person preview to date.
