1767 Stampless Folded Letter, Blandford, Virginia to Madeira via the Falmouth–Madeira–West Indies Packet
Scarce Origin and Destination
Mise à prix: $150
Estimation: $300 - $400
Sold For $150
Letter datelined "26 Nov 1767" from John Baird in Blandford, Virginia, addressed to Newton & Gordon, Madeira. Carried privately to a port and placed aboard the Falmouth Packet Duncannon. Received "4 Jan 1768" and answered "18 Jan 1768".
There is an article written on August 20, 1767 from the Virginia Gazette that mentions a Captain Robert Crawford who is listed in manuscript on the FL, who had a West Indies Packet that entered the James River. The FL most likely was put on a ship on the James River in Virginia that sailed directly to Madeira.
Also, there are sailing records that the Duncannon packet departed Falmouth on December 24, 1767, and arrived at Madeira on January 4, 1768, taking 40 days to arrive in Madeira on January 4th as well.

Newport, Rhode Island, Large Olive Green Datestamp with Fancy "FREE" in Old English Letters, on 1824 Folded Cover
Endorsed By Son of Colonial Rebel Postal-Rider
Mise à prix: $200
Estimation: $400 - $500
Sold For $360
Addressed to Rev. Selah Strong Woodhull at the American Bible Society in New York City. Manuscript endorsement "Benj R Mumford Postmaster" at top, of Benjamin Mumford who was the postmaster of Newport from 1813-1827.
Benjamin B. Mumfor was the son of Benjamin Mumford Sr., a rebellious colonial post rider who, along with Peter Mumford, operated a private mail service in defiance of British postal law. The Mumfords’ service gained wide local support for offering better rates than the King’s Post.
In 1775, amid growing revolutionary sentiment, the Rhode Island General Assembly formally appointed Benjamin and relative, Peter, Mumford as post-riders. They were directed not to handle any letters from the King's post offices "heretofore established in this Colony."
British postal inspector Hugh Finlay reported in 1774 that “There’s two Post offices in New Port, the King’s and Mumford’s, and the revenue of the last is the greatest.” Later, a letter addressed to Benjamin Franklin described how Mumford was detained by the British Navy aboard the HMS Rose for carrying rebel mail, his letters seized by Captain Wallace.
