Lot 3187

Teese & Co. Penny Post, 137L1, 1c Blue on Bluish, Tied on Cover with #11A 3c Brownish Carmine

Extremely Fine, Most Beautiful Example Among the Six Other Recorded Tied Covers

Mise à prix: $750

Estimation: $1,500 - $2,000

Sold For $850

The Teese & Co. stamp with ample margins all around, a most remarkable example. Both stamps tied by an indistinct "PA. MAY 21, (1852)" postmark, addressed to Strosburg, Penn.

Steven M. Roth recorded twelve Teese and Co. covers in his 1993 Penny Post census, including six genuinely tied examples. One previously listed tied cover is now known to be a Fox fake, reducing the total to six. This cover was not known to Roth at the time of his census and represents an additional genuinely tied example, bringing the count of genuine tied covers to seven.
This is an exceptional and newly documented tied example from this scarce Philadelphia local post.
