We are honored to present The Philatelic Icons Sale, the largest and most significant auction Americana Stamps has ever offered.

This auction is a natural fit for 2026, the 250th year of the United States, and for the Boston 2026 World Expo (May 23 to 30, Booth 141), the once-per-decade international exhibition where we are proud to open the sale. Opening: $850

Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500

Certificates: PF 493989

Signed Elliott Perry
Stamp cut to shape and tied by red "5" rate handstamp with matching "Hudson Riv. Mail N.Y. Jul. 26" route agent circular datestamp on 1847 folded letter to Great Barrington, Massachusetts with manuscript "Paid" crossed out at top right. The stamp with a vertical crease at bottom and a small piece replaced at left.
This New York City Express Post adhesive is often confused with Boyd's Eagle design because of their similar appearance, but the issue is considerably scarcer. Only about 15 covers are recorded, including both the Black on Green Glazed and Orange on White varieties. All examples were carried to the mails, and only roughly half are recorded with the stamp tied.
This tied example is very fine in appearance, and is the only recorded New York City Express Post example bearing a Hudson River route agent datestamp.

Provenance

Ex Schwartz, signed Elliott Perry
