This cover, dated May 8, 1883, was used four days after the federal raid on Boyd’s and Hussey’s offices, an action in which authorities seized approximately twenty five thousand letters and circulars and detained employees for operating private mail service in violation of federal law. The New York Times reported the raid on May 5, placing this cover just three days after the article and within the immediate aftermath of the government’s enforcement action.
Covers used during this short post raid interval are scarce and represent the final stage of Boyd’s operation before its decline.
