The cover dated May 19, 1883 was posted fifteen days after the federal raid of May 4, 1883, when authorities entered the offices of Boyd’s and Hussey’s, seized large quantities of mail, and detained several carriers for operating in violation of postal law, but before the June court decision.
The postal crackdown did not end the service immediately. According to the 1883 Annual Report of the Postmaster General, the government instituted actions against New York’s private expresses, obtained judgments, and later dismissed all pending suits on the advice of the Solicitor of the Treasury and the Department of Justice.
